Airbnb for pets: New site matching pet owners with local hosts

Airbnb for pets: New site matching pet owners with local hosts | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

Australian pet owners are using an Airbnb-style website, PetHomeStay, to find local sitters for their much-loved animals over the holiday season.

When the Radisch family heads off for a holiday this summer, they will have a big problem: their metre-tall, huge-pawed, great Dane-greyhound mix, Jackson.

"Every time we go away, it's a concern," Michael Radisch said.

Traditional kennels are expensive — some charge as much as $80 a day over the holidays.

But Mr Radisch is conscious Jackson may be wearing out his welcome with his extended family.

"Do we ask our friends and family? Maybe, they've looked after him many times. If we're going away for a week or so, we don't want to burden them for that long," he said.

This year, the solution for Jackson was close at hand. His owners have selected a local host through the website PetHomeStay, a site matching owners with those willing to look after pets for a daily fee.

While Uber is illegal, Airbnb gets government help

While Uber is illegal, Airbnb gets government help | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

Tourism Victoria is getting into bed with Airbnb, as the online app's money-minting hosts claim they are out-competing five-star hotels.

The government's official tourism agency is working with Airbnb to promote Melbourne's middle and outer suburbs, such as Fitzroy and St Kilda, in an effort to encourage tourism to non-traditional areas.  The tie-up ironically came only a day after the Melbourne

Magistrates Court effectively declared ride-share company and fellow sharing-economy pioneer Uber was operating illegally.  Australian Hotels Association chief executive Brian Kearney acknowledges that Airbnb is a legitimate competitor – but he's not happy the hosts don't have to pay tax.

"An Airbnb is not taxed at all. If you're running a hotel business, you bear the full federal and state taxes.  Some would form a view that you challenge all competition that's put in front of you. That's probably not the way that we're looking at it – the tourist has got the right to choose whatever accommodation they see fit."

The new partnership will see Tourism Victoria and Airbnb work together on several step-out websites to promote Melbourne's outer-Metro suburbs.

How to start a Bed and breakfast business

How to start a Bed and breakfast business | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

Running a bed and breakfast might seem like a fairly simple and pain-free start-up, but there are several hurdles to success in the sector.   The B&B industry is becoming increasingly professional, with a series of regulatory requirements.

B&B operators need to comply with a multitude of laws and licensing requirements including planning, food safety, liquor licensing, insurance, safety, employment, hire of locums, and anti-discrimination.

Your first move should be to make an appointment with your local council. They’re responsible for businesses complying with state laws and council by-laws in areas such as planning permits, business registration, food safety, electrical safety, fire safety and signage.

Businesses that do not comply with these laws can incur fines, and breaches may also jeopardise any insurance claim.

The real advantages of a bed and breakfast accommodation | Travel2be Australia

The real advantages of a bed and breakfast accommodation | Travel2be Australia | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

When you are away from home, there is nothing more comforting that having that “home” feeling. That’s what makes bed and breakfasts so special. You can get a bed, a breakfast , and a personal host.

Staying at a bed and breakfast has some important advantages. Since it is often run by local people who are most familiar with the interesting sights in the area, you not only get a bed and breakfast, but often you get personal tour guides too. Your “hosts” can tell you about the local attractions and suggest interesting sights for you to see, which you may otherwise never even knew existed.

Another benefit is that your hosts will know a lot about the local transportation and they can help you find you way about the area. And for serious shoppers , your local host could guide you to all the best shopping areas and show you where the best bargains are. This could mean big savings for you. The owners of a bed and breakfast are often able to provide information about the local attractions that is much more interesting than the commercial travel guides. That personal local touch could be just priceless.

Airbnb's big Sydney summer in regulator's sights | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

Imagine if 25,000 people turned up at your New Year's Eve party. Fair chance the neighbours are not going to like it.

Spare a thought, then, for local councils and the state government next Thursday, when part of Airbnb's biggest-ever cohort careens into Sydney on December 31.

That night, a record number of global bookings is expected see more than a million people use the only short-term letting service so ubiquitous it is a verb, with 25,000 of them staying in Sydney.

Airbnbing is to "belong anywhere," according to the company. But to some in residential neighbourhoods who've suddenly found themselves at the forefront of the visitor economy, that verb just makes them want to be anywhere else.

How Airbnb is taking over Sydney, one beach at a time

How Airbnb is taking over Sydney, one beach at a time | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

Some of Sydney's trendiest seaside suburbs are riding high on the Airbnb tidal wave.

Airbnb host Julia* rarely waits long for her next guest. The studio attached to her Tamarama home is pretty much booked out from September to March – the entire time it's available, she says.

"[Neighbouring] Bondi has a pretty bad reputation in terms of loud backpackers ... Also, there's really no hotels in Tamarama or Bronte and the beaches and the coastal walk are obviously big attractions," she said.

Tamarama may lack hotels but there's no shortage of places to stay.

Airbnb conference changes the way Tasmanian accommodation business thinks

Airbnb conference changes the way Tasmanian accommodation business thinks | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

Around 5,000 people recently attended an Airbnb conference in France to discuss the new form of travel with interested parties from around the world, including Tasmania.

Gina Scott, a part-owner of Platypus Park accommodation in Bridport, north east Tasmania, said the conference was an opportunity she could not miss.

"There's a new art of travel developing in the world, where people actually want to connect and live like a local, not just go to a place and go into a cafe," Ms Scott told Hilary Burden on ABC Northern Tasmania.

"They want to live like a local and the Airbnb concept is helping to develop places for people to stay so they can connect with locals."

Cancer care lodge opens

Cancer care lodge opens | Bed and Breakfast | Scoop.it

JO Holding wondered whether she’d stepped into the right house when she saw her transformed Two Rocks bed-and-breakfast for the first time.

It has now opened as Genesis CancerCare Lodge for rural patients needing accommodation while they undergo treatment at the Joondalup facility.

Ms Holding, the Two Rocks-Yanchep Assisted Cancer Travels (TRYACT) co-founder, told the Times earlier this year she had felt driven to help when she heard that cancer sufferers who were unable to pay out-of-pocket accommodation costs were sleeping in their cars or stopping their treatment.

She said there had been a shortage of “appropriate” accommodation for country cancer patients, with none in Perth’s far northern suburbs.

The lodge offers four private rooms for people eligible for the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS) allowance for adult cancer patients who live more than 100km from a treatment facility.
